Book-Shaped Gravestones
In general, book-shaped headstones are best suited for two deceased people. For instance, a husband and wife’s inscription along with a memorial photograph will beautifully complement our memorial books. With this in mind, each person would have their own commemoration on a single page. In addition to this, a generic memorial verse can also be engraved on the sub-base below the book. If however, the memorial is for one deceased person, their name and dates would usually be on the left, while a memorial verse or image would be engraved to the right.
Book Gravestone Symbolism
As can be seen from the below examples our book gravestones are uniquely shaped in the form of an open book. The design itself consists of two open scroll pages with a hand-carved tassel sometimes carved in the center. To further complement the book, a matching surround with pillars and a roof can also be adapted to the design. Subsequently, book memorials can represent many devotions the deceased may have had an affinity for during their lifetime. The following are but just a few examples of careers or hobbies loved ones may have had an affinity for:
- Publisher or bookseller.
- Reading or writing.
- Reading the Bible or prayer.
- Great knowledge of a particular subject.
The Book of Life
By and large, an open book headstone symbolizes the book of life. In this book, God holds the names of each individual who is destined for Heaven or the world to come. For example, in revelation, the book of life is described as “a book from which believers will never be removed” (Rev 3:5). With this in mind, we take comfort in knowing the salvation of our deceased is assured and their eternity is with Christ.
